Tropical Storm Zeta (2005) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Zeta.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Zeta had a complex origin. An upper tropospheric trough had cut off and had
become an upper level low about 650 nm WNW of the Cape Verde Islands. A
surface trough, the remains of a cold front, were below the upper low. On the
29th of December, difluence from the upper low induced a closed surface low to form along
the surface front, just north of the upper low center. The system gained enough
convection to become a tropical depression that day. Banding continued to
improve, and by the 30th the depression had become tropical storm Zeta. The
storm initially drifted NW, and strengthened slowly. A ridge turned Zeta west on
the 31st. Shear then hit Zeta but, the system was too shallow to be really
affected by the mostly upper level shear. Zeta then strengthened to its peak
intensity of 65 mph on January 1st. Zeta was only the 2nd system ever to cross
calender years. Zeta then heading SW and weakened from shear again but, it
held on and hit 65 mph winds again on January 3rd. Zeta then turned west right
into the westerlies. Shear increased enough to start weakening Zeta on the 4th.
Zeta finally lost tropical storm strength on the 6th, and became a remnant low
the same day. The remnants of Zeta dissipated on the 7th as a front approached.

Casualty and Damage Overview
