Tropical Depression 5 (1997) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical depression 5.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Tropical depression 5 originated from a tropical wave which moved off the
African coast on July 11th. The wave moved westward across the Atlantic under
the subtropical ridge and started to show signs of organization on the 16th. By
the 17th the wave gained enough organization to be considered a tropical
depression, about 475 nm E of Barbados. The depression continued to move
WNW under the tropical ridge and strengthened. It appears that TD 5 reached
tropical storm strength for a little while in fact. The depression then degenerated
into a tropical wave from worsening environmental conditions on the 18th. The
wave briefly became a depression on the 19th again before moving into the
Lesser Antilles. The remnant wave then continued as a focus for convection
across the Lesser Antilles, through Puerto Rico, into the Bahamas, and across
the Florida Straits before dissipating in the Gulf of Mexico on the 23rd.
