Meteorological Analysis
|
Stan originated from a tropical wave which moved off the coast of Africa on September
17th. The wave showed little activity due to high shear as it crossed the Atlantic. On
September 27th the wave finally started to show activity as environmental conditions
improved. At this point the wave was located in the western Caribbean. The wave really
started to become organized on October 1st as it approached the Yucatan, and a
tropical depression formed that day. The depression quickly strengthened into tropical
storm Stan. Meanwhile, a ridge induced Stan to go WNW. Stan made landfall on the Yucatan
near Tulum on October 2nd, Stan crossed the peninsula within a day and
became a depression again. The warm waters of the Bay of Campeche quickly brought
Stan back to a tropical storm though on the 3rd. This strengthening continued and Stan
reached hurricane status on the 4th. Its maximum wind speed of 80 mph was attained
shortly afterwards. During this time, a combination of a deep cyclonic flow over South
America and a building ridge to the north turned Stan WSW. Stan made landfall on the
4th about 80 nm ESE of Veracruz, Mexico. Stan brought very heavy rainfalls to Mexico, causing a catastrophe. Stan then moved inland and dissipated on the 5th, although its remnants went on to make several new systems in the Atlantic and East Pacific later on.

Casualty and Damage Overview
|
Stan brought very heavy rains to Mexico and the rest of Central America, which resulted in
a catastrophe on the same level as Katrina. The official Stan death toll is 80, although its
rains combined with synoptic rains resulted in 1000-2000 deaths.
