Meteorological Analysis
|
Peter originated from an extra-tropical low which cut off from the Westerlies on
December 5th. The low moved southwards and developed convection. On the
7th the convection became organized enough to consider the low sub-tropical
storm Peter. Peter skipped the depression phase because it already had gale
force winds. Peter initially moved south and developed convection near its center,
this resulted in Peter becoming a full fledged tropical storm on the 9th. Peter
attained its maximum intensity of 70 mph with a pressure of 990 mb on the
same day. Peter was 700 nm WNW of the Cape Verde Islands at the time. An
eye and eye wall structure also became apparent during Peter's peak. A front then
approached Peter, causing Peter to turn north into cooler waters. Shear also
increased from the front, and Peter began to weaken. Peter weakened into a
tropical depression by the 10th and continued north. On the 11th Peter
transitioned into an extra-tropical cyclone and was absorbed by a front.
