Tropical Storm Odette (2003) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Odette.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Odette originated from a frontal system which was extending through Cuba
into the southwestern Caribbean on November 30th. On December 1st a low
pressure formed along this front just north of Panama. The front then retreated
and the low separated from the front. By December 3rd convection was
increasing with the low, and a mid-level circulation formed. A tropical wave then
added to the brew some more and on December 4th the area became a tropical
depression, about 300 nm south of Jamaica. The depression then became
tropical storm Odette shortly afterwards. Odette then continued to move ENE
due to the normal winter westerlies, and strengthened. An eye and eye wall
structure formed on the 4th. By the time reconnaissance flew into the system on
the 5th, Odette's inner core was deteriorating. Odette turned NNE on the 6th
and reached its peak intensity of 65 mph. Strong shear then began to effect
Odette, and the system lost its vertical stacking. Odette weakened into a
50 mph storm by the time it made landfall in Cabo Falso, Dominican Republic
on the 6th. Odette was shredded over the mountains of Hispaniola but, kept
winds of 45 mph in bands over water. Odette became extra-tropical on the 7th
as it merged with a front. Odette dissipated on the 9th as it continued along
the frontal zone.

Casualty and Damage Overview

There were 8 deaths and 14 injuries attributed to Odette, all in the Dominican
Republic. These deaths were associated with fresh water flooding. 2 indirect
deaths also occurred in the Dominican Republic. There was widespread
damage in the Dominican Republic, with 35% of the Banana crop destroyed.
