Meteorological Analysis
|
Noel originated from a non-tropical low that was over the Atlantic in early
November. The low first developed on November 2nd and began to deepen.
The low occluded as it moved WNW, allowing for the low to develop a warm core.
It was determined on November 4th that the low had become a subtropical
storm, about 775 nm south of Cape Race, Newfoundland. The subtropical storm
accelerated to the north during this time and formed convection around the
center. A ring of convection 60 nm wide eventually formed. The low then
became a full fledged tropical storm. Noel quickly strengthened into a 75 mph
hurricane about 535 nm SSE of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Shear associated
with a trough then began to affect Noel and Noel weakened into a tropical
storm by the 6th. Noel continued to weaken and became an extratropical storm
later that day, about 285 nm SSE of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Extratropical
Noel was absorbed by another system shortly afterwards.
