Hurricane Nicole (1998) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Nicole.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Nicole originated from a non tropical low which was along a front, a few hundred
miles south of the Canary Islands. Convection began to develop around the low,
causing the low to become warm core. By November 24th the low was organized
enough to be considered tropical storm Nicole. Nicole then strengthened to
70 mph later in the day, as it was under favorable environmental conditions in
the middle of an upper level low. A ridge to the north steered Nicole SW, and a
trough swept over Nicole on the 26th. Nicole degenerated into a remnant low by
the 27th from intense shear but, the system rebounded later in the day and
became a tropical storm again as shear lessened. Nicole then began to turn
NE on the 29th ahead of an approaching trough, and reached its maximum
intensity of 85 mph with a pressure of 979 mb on December 1st. Nicole formed
an eye and eye wall that day over anomalously warm waters, before becoming
extratropical later in the day as it raced NNW around a deep layer circulation
which was over the Atlantic.
