Hurricane Michael (2000) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Michael.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Michael originated from a complex non-tropical interaction. A cold front moved
off of North America on October 7th, and stalled while it was located from
Cuba to Bermuda on October 10th. An upper level low then dropped southwards
from the mid-latitudes and interacted with the front, resulting in a surface low
forming along the front on October 12th in the Central Bahamas. The low
deepened on the 14th and moved under the upper low on the 15th, the low
was designated a subtropical depression at this time. The subtropical depression
was 650 nm east of Jacksonville, Florida at formation. The subtropical
depression became a subtropical storm soon after formation. The air within
the subtropical storm steadily warmed due to convection and by the 17th the
system was declared tropical storm Michael. Michael became a hurricane on the
17th under favorable environmental conditions, and reached peak intensity by
the 19th with winds of 100 mph and a pressure of 965 mb. This strengthening
appears to have been partially due to Michael's interaction with a trough
however. Michael then became extratropical as it raced towards Newfoundland
on the 19th due to the cyclone becoming embedded in a front and heavy shear.
Michael then made landfall with hurricane intensity on the southern coast of
Newfoundland on the 19th. Michael continued to become more extratropical as
it traversed Newfoundland, and became untraceable by the 20th.

Casualty and Damage Overview

There are no casualties attributed to Michael. There was some minor wind
damage on Newfoundland however due to extratropical Michael.
