Meteorological Analysis
|
Matthew originated from a tropical which left the coast of Africa on September
19th. The wave remained in close proximity to Lisa for most of its Atlantic
crossing. The wave moved across the Lesser Antilles on September 29th and
interacted with an upper low. Shower activity broke out, and eventually became
better organized in the Bay of Campeche on October 5th. An anticyclone formed
over the wave on the 7th allowing further organization, and a surface low
formed. By October 8th the wave became a tropical depression, 180 nm SE of
Brownsville, Texas. The depression strengthened into tropical storm Matthew
that day, and moved north and northeast due to an upper low over Texas.
Matthew reached its max winds of 45 mph on the 9th, with a pressure of
997 mb. Matthew made landfall in Cocodrie, Louisiana with 40 mph winds on the
10th. Matthew weakened into an extra-tropical depression and was absorbed on the 11th.
