Hurricane Karl (2004) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Karl.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Karl originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
September 13th. The wave steadily organized as it moved west under the
Azores high, and by September 16th the wave became a tropical depression
about 340 nm SW of the Cape Verde Islands. The depression became tropical
storm Karl the same day. Karl began to head more northerly by the 17th, and
under favorable environmental conditions became a hurricane. Karl continued
to head more northerly into a weakness in the sub-tropical ridge, and by the
21st was heading north. Winds in Karl reached their max of 145 mph at this
time, with a pressure of 938 mb. Karl turned northeastward on the 23rd from an
approaching trough, and began to steadily weaken due to eye wall cycles and
progressively cooler waters. Karl then turned north as the trough rapidly
approached and became an extra-tropical cyclone. Karl's winds were 75 mph
at transition. Karl then rapidly moved towards Norway as an extra-tropical
system and was absorbed near Norway on the 28th.
