Hurricane Ivan (1998) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Ivan.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Ivan originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on September
16th. The wave began to organize once over the warm waters of the Atlantic
and became a tropical depression on the 19th, about 175 nm SW of the Cape
Verde Islands. A trough over the central Atlantic then caused the depression
to turn NW on th 20th, the trough also caused shear over the depression.
Despite the shear, the depression became tropical storm Ivan on the 20th,
reaching winds of 65 mph on the 22nd before starting to weaken from shear.
Ivan rebounded however and became a hurricane on the 23rd at about 30 N.
Ivan then strengthened to its maximum intensity of 90 mph on the 26th with a
pressure of 975 mb, about 300 nm W of the Azores. The westerlies then caught
Ivan on the 26th and caused the storm to move E. Shear also began to increase
over Ivan at this time and Ivan weakened to a tropical storm on the 27th.
Cooler waters also contributed to weakening. Ivan then rapidly became
extratropical on the 27th and moved into the British Isles as a gale center.
