Hurricane Isaac (2000) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Isaac.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Isaac originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
September 20th. The wave organized quickly after leaving the coast and
became a tropical depression on the 21st, a few hundred miles south of the
Cape Verde Islands. The depression moved WNW under the subtropical ridge
and strengthened into tropical storm Isaac on the 22nd due to favorable
environmental conditions. Isaac continued to strengthen and became a
hurricane on the 23rd, an eye formed at this time. Isaac reached winds of
120 mph on the 24th before weakening started. Isaac weakened for a number
of reasons, including slight shear and cool waters. Isaac weakened down to
85 mph on the 26th before beginning to restrengthen. Isaac rapidly intensified
into a 140 mph category 4 hurricane by the 28th, with a pressure of 943 mb.
Isaac then turned north due to a weakness in the subtropical ridge. Isaac was
about 440 nm east of Bermuda at the time. Isaac then began to weaken from
cooler waters, and weakened into a tropical storm by October 1st. Isaac lost
tropical characteristics the same day. Isaac continued as a powerful
extratropical system though and impacted the British Isles on the 3rd. Isaac
finally merged with a larger extratropical low on the 4th, north of Europe.

Casualty and Damage Overview

One death is attributed to Isaac. The death occurred when large swells from
Isaac capsized a boat off of New York. The only damage from Isaac would be
the capsized boat.
