Tropical Storm Hermine (1998) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Hermine.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Hermine originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
September 5th. The tropical wave raised little suspicion as it moved west under
the subtropical ridge until September 12th, when convection increased with the
wave as it approached the Lesser Antilles. The wave then continued to generate
convection as it moved through the Caribbean and eventually into the Gulf of
Mexico. A low pressure then formed in association with the wave once it was over the
Gulf of Mexico and gradually organized. By the 17th the wave was organized
enough to be considered a tropical depression. The depression initially moved
in a small loop as it interacted with an upper low over the Bay of Campeche.
The depression then strengthened into tropical storm Hermine on the 19th
despite heavy shear, and reached its max winds of 45 mph the same day.
On the 20th Hermine made landfall with winds of 40 mph in Cocodrie, Louisiana.
Hermine was very asymmetrical due to shear at landfall. Hermine then
dissipated as it moved inland on the 20th.
