Tropical Storm Harvey (1999) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Harvey.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Harvey originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
September 4th. The wave was inhibited by hurricane Floyd's outflow as it crossed
the Atlantic under the subtropical ridge. On September 16th as Floyd began to
move away from the wave, the wave began to organize. The wave then drifted
into the Gulf of Mexico and formed a surface low on the 18th. On September
19th convection increased with the low and the low was declared a tropical
depression, about 350 nm WSW of St. Petersburg, Florida. The depression
continued to strengthen and became tropical storm Harvey on the 20th,
reaching a peak intensity of 60 mph with a pressure of 995 mb the same day.
Heavy shear and dry air then began to affect Harvey, causing the storm to
become very lopsided. On the 20th and 21st a mid-level flow pushed Harvey
E and then ESE. This motion resulted in Harvey making landfall near Everglades
City, Florida on the 21st with its peak winds of 60 mph. Harvey rapidly crossed
Florida, bringing heavy rains with gusty winds. On the 22nd Harvey became
extratropical and merged with a front off of the Carolinas.

Casualty and Damage Overview

There are no casualties attributed to Harvey. There was minor wind and flood
damage from Harvey in Florida, totaling $15 million.
