Hurricane Gabrielle (2001) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Gabrielle.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Gabrielle originated from a trough which was stalled over the Gulf of Mexico on
September 5th. The trough cut off from the westerlies on September 9th and
became a mid level low over Florida. A surface low formed under the mid-level
low in the Gulf of Mexico. The system then became tropical depression 8 on the
11th. There were very weak steering currents initially around the depression so
the depression went in a slow loop over the Gulf of Mexico. During this time,
environmental conditions were favorable and the depression became tropical
storm Gabrielle about 175 nm SW of Venice, Florida on the 13th. A trough then
approached Gabrielle and Gabrielle accelerated NE. Gabrielle continued to
strengthen and reached winds of 70 mph just before landfall in Venice, Florida
on the 14th. Gabrielle might have been a hurricane at landfall. Gabrielle then
traversed Florida and weakened to 45 mph due to shear and land. Gabrielle
moved into the Atlantic near Titusville on the 15th. Once in the ocean, Gabrielle
began to strengthen despite heavy shear. Gabrielle reached its maximum
intensity of 80 mph with a pressure of 983 mb on the 17th. Gabrielle finally
began to weaken from shear and cooler waters and was downgraded to a
tropical storm on the 19th. Gabrielle then lost all convection and moved near
Newfoundland on the 21st. Heavy rains occurred in Newfoundland. Gabrielle
merged with an extra tropical low over the Atlantic on the 21st.

Casualty and Damage Overview

2 deaths are directly attributed to Gabrielle with 1 indirect death. All of these
deaths were in Florida. There was alot of flooding across Central and North
Florida from Gabrielle, resulting in total damages of $230 million.
