Hurricane Frances (2004) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Frances.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Frances originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on August
21st. The wave gradually became better organized as it crossed the ocean and
by August 24th the wave became a tropical depression, 655 nm WSW of the
Cape Verde Islands. The sub-tropical ridge continued to steer the depression
WNW, and environmental conditions were good. The depression became
tropical storm Frances on the 24th. Frances then continued to strengthen quite
a bit, becoming a hurricane on the 26th. Frances reached winds of 135 mph on
the 28th. Ridging then built in north of Frances and the storm turned westward.
Weakening occurred during this time due to an eye wall replacement cycle.
Frances began to strengthen again on the 29th, and by the 31st it reached its
peak winds of 145 mph. As Frances passed north of the Antilles from
September 1st to 2nd, Frances maintained winds around 140 mph. It reached
its minimum pressure of 937 mb during this time. Shear then began to impact
Frances and it weakened to a Cat 3. Frances moved over the Bahamas from
September 2nd to 4th as a Cat 3. Steering currents then weakened considerably
as Frances was moving through the north western Bahamas due to a ridge
building into the west. This caused Frances to drift slowly over the Gulf Stream
on September 4th. Frances strengthened over the Gulf Stream to 110 mph as
shear weakened. Frances made landfall on Hutchinson Island, Florida on the 5th
with 105 mph winds. Most of the hurricane force winds were confined in the
eye wall, with areas in the outer bands reporting moderate tropical storm
conditions. Frances then moved across Florida and emerged into the Gulf of
Mexico as a tropical storm on the 6th, near Port Richey, Florida. France's
structure was badly hurt by land, so it didn't strengthen over water. Frances
made landfall in Florida's Big Bend on the 6th with 65 mph winds. Frances
recurved on the 7th and became a tropical depression on the 7th over West
Virginia. On the 9th Frances became extra-tropical, and went over New York
with gale force winds. Frances finally dissipated over the Gulf Of St. Lawrence,
Canada on September 10th.

Casualty and Damage Overview

7 deaths are attributed to Frances, 5 in Florida, 1 in Ohio, and 1 in the Bahamas.
There are 42 deaths indirectly related to Frances, 32 in Florida, 8 in Georgia, 1
in Ohio, and 1 in the Bahamas. Total damages due to Frances were $9 billion
in the U.S. This makes Frances one of the more severe hurricanes in U.S. history.
