Hurricane Emily (2005) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Emily.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Emily originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on July 6th. The wave
was very vigorous as it made its way west under the sub-tropical ridge, and by the 11th
a tropical depression had formed. At this point the depression was 1100 nm from the
Windward Islands. The depression became tropical storm Emily by July 12th, but it wasn't
living up to expectations. Shear and dry air were hindering Emily alot. The fact that Emily
was moving fast didn't help it either. On July 13th-14th the poorly organized storm had its
center re-form to the north and east. This coincided with a period of relatively fast
strengthening. Emily strengthened into a hurricane on the 14th and passed over Grenada
with about 90 mph winds that day. Emily then continued into the Caribbean. A strong
and continuous ridge to the north of Emily kept Emily on a straight west north west track.
During this time, Emily was strengthening rapidly at times and reached category 5 strength
with 160 mph winds and a pressure of 929 mb. Emily passed within 100 nm of Jamaica the
same day, July 17th. Mechanisms inside of Emily then caused a slow weakening as Emily
continued west north west towards the Yucatan. Emily made landfall in Tulum on the
Yucatan July 18th with 135 mph winds. Emily then quickly moved across the Yucatan, but
weakened to 75 mph. Emily initially had trouble re-strengthening but, it got its act together
and reached winds of 125 mph before landfall in San Fernando, Mexico on the 20th.
Hurricane force winds reached southern Texas. Emily then moved inland and dissipated
over the mountains on the 21st.

Casualty and Damage Overview

There were 6 casualties directly from Emily and 2 indirect ones. 5 were in Jamaica, 1 in
Grenada, and 2 indirect deaths occurred in Mexico during preparations. Grenada and
outlying islands reported wind damage. Emily's strong winds were in a small radius upon
landfall in Mexico. Communities that were directly hit were effectively destroyed though,
especially Laguna Madre. Wind damage did occur all the way up to south Texas.
