Meteorological Analysis
|
Dennis originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on the 29th of June.
The wave moved across the Atlantic in a non-active state until July 3rd, when convection
began to increase. At this point, the wave had a broad and disorganized area of low
pressure associated with it. This low split into 2 organizing low pressures, the easternmost
one continued on to become Dennis while the westernmost one drifted west and dissipated.
The remaining area of disturbed weather became a tropical depression on July 4th over the
Windward Islands. The depression continued west under the sub-tropical ridge, and then
turned west north west on the 5th. At this time the depression strengthened into tropical storm Dennis. Dennis continued west north west and bombed out on July 7th. Conditions
were perfect for rapid intensification. Dennis's central pressure reached 951 mb, with a
wind speed of 140 mph. Dennis made landfall in Punta del Ingles, Cuba with this ferocious
power on July 8th. Dennis then moved offshore of Cuba, into the Gulf of Guacanayabo.
Dennis had weakened to a 125 mph Cat 3, but Dennis re-strengthened quickly to 150 mph.
Interaction with land then took Dennis down to 140 mph by the time it made another
landfall in Punta Mangles Altos, Cuba. Dennis then made a long traversal of Cuba, before
emerging offshore near Havana on July 9th with 85 mph winds. Radar from the Keys
revealed a poorly organized Dennis. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream however
revived Dennis. And Dennis reached winds of 145 mph and a pressure of 930 mb in the
Gulf of Mexico on July 10th. Dry air and shear then caused Dennis to slowly weaken. By
landfall on the same day Dennis had weakened to 125 mph with a pressure of 946 mb.
Landfall was near Gulf Beach, Florida. Dennis then continued north and slightly west
weakening into a tropical storm in Alabama. Dennis meandered as a remnant low in
Ohio until the 15th. Dennis finally dissipated as it was accelerating over Canada on the 18th.

Casualty and Damage Overview
|
Dennis took a staggering 42 lives. 22 people died in Haiti, 16 in Cuba, 3 in the U.S., and 1
in Jamaica. There were 12 indirect deaths due to Dennis in Florida, mostly from equipment
problems. Storm damage from Dennis was extensive, but there are only figures for it in the
U.S. and Jamaica. About $32 million of damage occurred in Jamaica while $2.23 billion of
damage occurred in the U.S.
