Hurricane Debby (2000) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Debby.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Debby originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
August 16th. The system was very vigorous upon leaving the coast and
became a tropical depression on the 19th, about 900 nm east of the Windward
Islands. The new depression continued west under the subtropical ridge and
became tropical storm Debby on the 20th due to favorable environmental
conditions. Debby continued to strengthen despite growing shear and reached
hurricane strength on the 21st. Debby reached its peak intensity of 85 mph the same
day. The central pressure of 1004 mb was unusually high for a hurricane. Debby
then passed over the Leeward and Virgin Islands on the 22nd as a 75 mph
hurricane. Debby weakened into a tropical storm on the 23rd due to shear, and
continued west into Hispaniola. The mountains of Hispaniola and heavy shear
shredded Debby on the 23rd, leaving a remnant swirl. The remnant swirl of
Debby dissipated near southern Cuba on the 24th. Debby's remnant tropical
wave brought stormy weather to Florida a few days later. Debby's sudden
dissipation was a welcome surprise for Florida, which was gearing up for a hurricane.

Casualty and Damage Overview

One death is indirectly attributed to Debby, it was in Puerto Rico. There was
some minor wind and surge damage across the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, and
Puerto Rico. Total U.S. damage was only $0.5 million however. The Dominican
Republic reported little damage as well.
