Tropical Storm Claudette (1997) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Claudette.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Claudette originated from a cold front which emerged into the Atlantic off of
North America in early July. On July 11th a non tropical low formed along this
front, a few hundred miles off of South Carolina. The low sat stationary for a
couple of days and developed a closed low level circulation. By the 13th the
low completely separated from the front and organized enough to be considered
a tropical depression, about 275 nm SSE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
The depression then strengthened into tropical storm Claudette later in the day
despite some shear. This strengthening also brought Claudette to its peak
intensity of 45 mph on the 13th. Claudette maintained its intensity at minimal
tropical storm strength as it raced north ahead of a trough, and then east once
it reached the westerlies. Claudette became extratropical on the 16th as it
merged with a front, and dissipated on the 19th over the Azores.
