Hurricane Cindy (1999) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Cindy.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Cindy originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on August 18th.
The tropical wave organized upon entering the Atlantic and became a tropical depression on the
19th, about 250 nm ESE of the Cape Verde Islands. The depression was initially inhibited
by strong shear but, shear relaxed by the 20th and the depression became tropical storm
Cindy. Cindy continued to strengthen and became a hurricane on the 22nd, about 390 nm
west of the Cape Verde Islands. Shear then impacted Cindy again and Cindy weakened
into a tropical storm later on the 22nd. Shear lessened again and Cindy regained hurricane
strength on the 26th, about 1100 nm SE of Bermuda. Cindy continued to strengthen as it
moved more northerly through a weakness in the subtropical ridge, and reached a peak
intensity of 140 mph with a pressure of 942 mb on the 28th. Cindy then made its closest
approach to Bermuda on the 29th, coming within 325 nm of the island. Shear began to
increase over Cindy at this time and Cindy weakened considerably in the coming days.
As Cindy accelerated NE on the 31st due to an approaching trough it was downgraded to
a tropical storm. Cindy was then absorbed on the 31st by a large extratropical system,
about 850 nm W of the Azores.
