Hurricane Cindy (2005) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Cindy.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Cindy originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on June 24th. The
tropical wave headed west under the sub-tropical ridge, and showed no signs of
organization. This was very typical for the time of year. Environmental conditions improved
however as the wave entered the Lesser Antilles on June 28th. Convection began to develop
along the wave. The tropical wave then continued west north west for the next 5 days, and
split in two during that time. The northern half of the wave organized enough to become
tropical depression Cindy on July 3rd. The depression then continued north west and
made landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula on July 4th. At this time, a trough began to pull the
depression due north. The depression then encountered the loop current as it moved into
the Gulf of Mexico from the Yucatan and quickly became tropical storm Cindy on July 5th.
As shear decreased, Cindy strengthened into a 75 mph hurricane on July 6th. Cindy made
landfall in Grand Isle, Louisiana that day and continued towards the mainland. Cindy
then weakened into a tropical storm and made landfall in coastal Mississippi. Cindy then
recurved to the north and east and weakened into a tropical depression. It dumped heavy
rain over the Eastern U.S. before moving out to sea on the 8th and becoming an
extra-tropical gale.

Casualty and Damage Overview

One man died during Cindy, after being sucked into a drainage ditch near Peachtree City,
Georgia. There was scattered wind damage across Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, resulting
in widespread power outages. Minor, yet disruptive storm surges occurred on Grand Isle
and Dauphin Island, and other low areas of the northern Gulf Coast. 2 tornadoes occurred
in Cindy, both on July 6th. An F2 in Hampton, Georgia caused extensive damage totaling
$40 million. An F0 in Elmore, Alabama was less damaging but did injure one man. Total
damages due to Cindy in the U.S. are estimated to be $320 million.
