Meteorological Analysis
|
Chantal originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on August
11th. The wave initially weakened but, by the 13th organization was on the
increase with the wave. A surface low formed and convection started to wrap
around the low. On August 14th the wave organized into a tropical depression,
about 1300 nm east of the Windward Islands. The depression was under the
influence of a strong subtropical ridge, causing the depression to move west at
over 20 kt. As has been seen with many tropical cyclones, a forward speed of
over 20 kt in the tropics can be unsustainable. The depression degenerated into
a tropical wave on September 16th. The tropical wave then moved through the
Windward Islands and brought with it some tropical storm force winds on the 17th. The wave continued to organize once west of the islands, and formed a
closed circulation 250 nm south of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The wave
was declared tropical storm Chantal shortly afterwards. Chantal then
strengthened to 65 mph but, the storms center raced ahead of convection on
the 18th and the whole storm weakened. Chantal got its act back together on
the 19th though and hit its maximum intensity of 70 mph. On the 20th
Chantal began to fall apart, the center once again drifted away from the
convection and pressures rose. The outer bands of Chantal continued to have
60 mph winds however. Chantal then made its final approach to the Yucatan on
the 20th. Shear lessened and Chantal slowed resulting in Chantal strengthening.
The ingredients were there for continued strengthening but, Chantal hit land with
70 mph winds stopping the strengthening process. Chantal finally dissipated
over the Yucatan on the 22nd.
