Hurricane Cesar (1996) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Cesar.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Cesar originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on July 17th.
The tropical wave showed little signs of organization as it moved west under the
subtropical ridge until the 22nd, when convection increased with the wave and
pressure drops were observed. The wave then moved into the Windward
Islands on the 24th, and became a tropical depression soon after leaving the
islands, just north of Margarita Island, Venezuela. The depression was at a
very low latitude, and became tropical storm Cesar just north of Caracao,
Venezuela on the 25th. Cesar was initially close to land and slow to strengthen
due to this but, as Cesar moved into the southwestern Caribbean sea it quickly
strengthened into a hurricane. Cesar reached its peak intensity of 80 mph on
the 27th, just before landfall in Bluefields, Nicaragua. A very rare event then
occurred. Cesar quickly crossed Central America, and became hurricane
Douglas in the East Pacific. Hurricane Douglas reached a maximum intensity of
130 mph with a pressure of 946 mb in the East Pacific, and moved within about
200 nm of Baja California. Douglas then encountered the stable North Pacific
marine layer and degenerated into a remnant swirl on August 6th.

Casualty and Damage Overview

51 deaths are attributed to Cesar across the Caribbean and Central America,
with most of these deaths from rain.
