Hurricane Beta (2005) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Beta.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Beta originated from a tropical wave which entered the Caribbean on the 21st,
the same wave which spawned Alpha. On the 25th the wave started to
consolidate over the southwestern Caribbean, and by the 26th the system
was organized enough to be considered a tropical depression. This depression
was located about 90 nm north of Panama. The depression began moving north
due to a deep digging trough, and by the 27th the depression strengthened into
tropical storm Beta. Over the next 2 days strengthening was slowed by some
shear but, on the 29th shear lessened. Beta intensified into a hurricane soon
after the shear dropped. On the 30th, a ridge built in north of Beta forcing the
storm west and strengthening continued. Beta reached major hurricane status
with 115 mph winds that day. Beta then shortly afterwards made landfall at
La Barra del Rio Grande, Nicaragua. Beta made landfall as a Cat 2 as indicated
by satellite. The small storm then quickly dissipated over Nicaragua on the 31st.

Casualty and Damage Overview

No casualties were reported in association with Beta. Extensive damage was
reported in various locations however. The most extensive damage occurred
on the island of Providencia, Colombia. The details aren't known. In Nicaragua
there was alot of damage to roofs and some moderate storm surge. In
Honduras Beta helped cause flooding.
