Tropical Storm Bertha (2002) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Bertha.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Bertha originated from a non-tropical surface trough which stretched from
Florida to the central Gulf of Mexico on August 1st. A broad surface low formed
along this trough on August 3rd. The low organized under favorable
environmental conditions, and became a tropical depression just east of the
Mississippi delta on the 4th. The depression quickly strengthened into tropical
storm Bertha, and made landfall with its maximum winds of 40 mph near
Boothville, Louisiana. Bertha headed WNW and weakened into a depression.
Bertha first turned west over land and then south. On the 7th Bertha emerged
into the Gulf of Mexico with a circulation evident. Bertha strengthened back into
a 30 mph depression initially but, didn't strengthen much more over the Gulf of
Mexico. Bertha then turned WNW and made landfall near Kingsville, Texas on
the 9th with winds of 30 mph. Bertha dissipated over land later that day.

Casualty and Damage Overview

There is 1 death attributed to Bertha, a drowning death in Florida. There was
minor flooding damage from Bertha's rain also but, there are no official damage totals.
