Tropical Storm Arthur (2002) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Arthur.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Arthur originated from a decaying front which extended across the Gulf of
Mexico in early July. On July 9th a weak surface circulation formed along this
front in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Convection formed in association with the
circulation. A trough then dropped down on June 13th and kicked the
disturbance NE across the southeastern U.S. Once offshore, the disturbance
organized and by July 14th it developed into a tropical depression, 40 nm WSW
of Hatteras, North Carolina. The depression continued NE and strengthened into
tropical storm Arthur by the 15th. Arthur reached its max winds of 60 mph
with a pressure of 997 mb on the 16th. Arthur was 350 nm south of Nova
Scotia at the time, and accelerating to speeds well above 30 kt. Arthur then
turned north on the 16th around a low and became extra-tropical as it moved
over Newfoundland. Extra-tropical Arthur then meandered between Greenland
and Newfoundland before diminishing on the 19th.
