Tropical Storm Alex (1998) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of tropical storm Alex.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Alex originated from a tropical wave which left the coast of Africa on July 26th.
A surface circulation formed in association with the wave by the 27th and the
wave was upgraded into a tropical depression, about 300 nm SSW of the Cape
Verde Islands. The depression continued to move WNW under the subtropical
ridge at a good pace and gradually organized into tropical storm Alex by the
29th. Shear then began to increase over Alex from a trough to the NW of Alex,
and Alex became asymmetrical. Despite this, Alex reached a peak intensity of
50 mph on the 30th with a pressure of 1002 mb due to a sudden burst of
convection. The convection waned though as shear continued and Alex
weakened into a tropical depression by August 2nd. The closed circulation in
association with Alex then opened up and the system as a whole dissipated
the same day.

Casualty and Damage Overview
