Hurricane Alberto (2000) Archive

This is the Hurricane Warning
archive of hurricane Alberto.
The best data available was used
to create this archive, in order to
make it as educational as possible.

Meteorological Analysis

Alberto originated from a tropical wave which moved off the African coast on
August 3rd. The wave was very vigorous upon entering the ocean and became
a tropical depression almost immediately after leaving the coast. The depression
moved west at up to 20 kt under the subtropical ridge and became tropical
storm Alberto on the 4th. Environmental conditions continued to be favorable
and Alberto became a hurricane by the 6th. Alberto reached winds of 90 mph
on the 7th as it turned WNW. An upper level low then formed west of Alberto,
causing heavy shear over Alberto. Alberto weakened into a tropical storm on
the 9th. Alberto then turned into a weakness in the subtropical ridge on the 11th
and became a hurricane again. Alberto began to turn NE once in the weakness,
and passed within 300 nm of Bermuda on the 11th. Alberto then reached its
max strength of 125 mph with a pressure of 950 mb on the 12th. Alberto had a
well defined eye and eye wall structure at this point. Alberto then began to get
affected by the westerlies and weakened into a tropical storm on the 14th as it
moved east. A ridge built to the north of the weakened Alberto and eventually turned
the storm back west. Alberto began to restrengthen on the 17th as it left the
shear. Alberto became a hurricane again on the 17th and reached winds of
105 mph on the 20th. A trough then finally kicked Alberto to the NE for the
last time and Alberto weakened from increasing shear. Alberto became an
extratropical storm on the 23rd and passed over Iceland on the 24th. Alberto
continued rapidly NE and finally dissipated 75 nm E of Jan Mayen Island on the
25th. Alberto had a very long lifetime.
